The book is written from the perspective of a young boy who finds himself
thrust into darkness when the lights suddenly go out at his family’s cabin. What
follows is a whimsical tale of why the lights go out, alternative lighting
options, and all the fun things people can do when power goes out.
“The idea for the book came about one night when we found ourselves in
this very situation for many hours,” said the book’s author, Sarah Phillips
Pellet. “My youngest son, who was five at the time, was scared and full of
questions about why the lights go out. My husband and I started off with the
fact-based answers and then our older son started coming up with silly reasons
for why the lights go out. We had a lot of fun that night and the book wrote
itself after that.”
Candles in the Cabin is set at
Highland Lakes and includes many familiar characters to residents of this lake
community: the Great Blue Heron, American Bald Eagle, and Brown Bear to name but
a few.
The book is illustrated by professional graphic artist Raul Gonzalez.
“Raul and I worked together for many months to come up with the look and feel of
the book. His interpretation of the characters and landscape added a vivid and
vibrant dimension to the story,” said Ms. Phillips Pellet.
